A VoIP softphone is an application running on a computer or mobile device that mimics the functionality of a VoIP deskphone. You can use a VoIP softphone in addition to or instead of a VoIP deskphone.
To add a softphone, you would first navigate to Phones in the Jazinga interface, then select SIP Phone in the Add Phones dropdown. Specify the person for whom you are setting up a phone, then select a secure username and password. Note if you select an insecure username and password, you run the risk of hackers compromising this username/password and making expensive calls through your system.
Note the primary and secondary SIP proxy mentioned, then click Save.
At this point, you would install the softphone and follow the instructions to enter the SIP proxies, username and password in the configuration screen for the specific softphone. We have examples for some popular softphones:
X-Lite 4 for Mac (http://www.counterpath.com/x-lite-download.html)
After installing and launching X-Lite 4, you would select X-Lite 4 Preferences, then Accounts. Click the + at the bottom of the screen and Add a new SIP account. See the screenshot below for what this screen looks like:
You can name the account something descriptive, then under “Allow this account for” select only “Call”.
Under User Details, enter the username/password you set earlier, and enter the primary SIP proxy noted above under Domain.
Under Domain Proxy, select “Register with domain” and set “Send outbound via” to “Domain”. Hit OK, and your softphone should be up and running in a few moments.
If you are using this from outside the office, you would need to go back into Account Settings and change the Domain setting from the primary SIP proxy noted above to the secondary SIP proxy also noted above.
